Frustration!

Ok, so it seems there's really not much material written about my topic or anything related to it...or am I really not good at finding it??!?!!

Any help from my course fellows would be much appreciated!!! If you may happen to know any type of literature that speaks about How a performer can create a career on its own, and to what extent this is actually possible...is a full training strictly recommended or discipline and self teaching can help a performer achieve its goals on his own? I find it extremely difficult to find someone that has experienced or researched on this topic and written about it; maybe it has a too broad feeling to it? But honestly I don't know how to narrow it down any more! This is my field of interest and now it feels a bit late for a change of direction...any thoughts please???

  1. Hi Laura. Don't panic. Relax a little. If you over stress about things you will end up being exhausted of thinking. I would ask Adesola about self-discipline as she knows a fair bit about it. In regards to how a performer can create a career on it's own, it really depends on what you perform and how you perform it. You can research about it but it's what you think it is, that will be crucial to help you. Adesola might know of some books you can read.

    I hope this helps

  2. Thank you Lily and happy to "know you".
Your words helped me relax a little :P and I think I will take your advise. Hopefully everything will come out more clearly to me once I define, within my research, what is performing to me.

    Thanks!

    Year: 2006
Title: The creative habit : learn it and use it for life : a practical guide

  5. Ciao Laura, complimenti sei veramente brava. I've followed your blogs and I think you are coming up with some very good written, researched and interesting work.

I too can recommend this book by Twylar Tharpe - The Creative Habit
She clearly lays out how she develops her ideas and herself as an autonomous dance artiste/choreographer.
I connected with it on a different level, mainly being reassured that I seem have a similar learning cycle as Twylar Tharpe, and our similar methods of create our work.

You may or may not want to read about and compare for example; noted choreographers like Martha Graham and Maestro Enrico Cecchetti, a ballet performer that became one of the greatest ballet teachers (a link to a web site that may get you started http://www.cecchettiballet.org/page.php?page=history )

Are there any Italian dancers/teachers you admire? you may find some great data in Italy, but I guess you will need to translate..
I don't really want to add more work for you, don't know if this will help.

Lilly is right, step back and relax a little, let things come to you.

    Best wishes

  6. Thanks for the advises!!!
Corinda it's nice to have another Italian in the course :) I will definitely have a look at this book to see if I can find some valuable information for my inquiry.. about finding data in Italy is something I want to incude as sub-question for my project, a cultural issue comparing UK and Italian organisations and artistic differences.

Have you got any personal experience that you may want to share? Anything that you admire/disregard in Italy and in the UK as an artist?

    Thanks

    Laura

    1. Laura, we didn't get a chance to speak at the writing workshop.. Unfortunately I don't have any experience as a teacher or dancer working in Italy.. I did however have a bad experience when I was dancing in North Africa as a dancer in 1979...I wasn't a member of Equity at that time and didn't have the 'protection' of the Union as an over seas performer. Our contract suddenly came to an abrupt end and it was ripped up as valueless. We had to find our own way out of Africa, the added problem was that there was a Military Coup in Tunisia at the time. Worrying & scary time but managed to get out of the country..
I trust you have Equity or something similar in place today.
      Best wishes
